President’s Message,
Meniere’s Disease is a disorder of the inner ear. It can devastate the lives of those afflicted and create turmoil for those who care for them. Working lives are often disrupted and careers can be brought to an end. The normally ordered and busy lives of otherwise healthy people can suddenly become totally unreliable.
There are many unresolved questions surrounding the condition. For nearly 150 years the cause and possible cure remains illusive. While medical and surgical advances to alleviate the affliction have been encouraging, in an Australian initiative, the Meniere’s Research Fund was established in 2002 as a development from the Meniere’s Support Group of NSW and is stepping up the research effort.
Our research program has been developed by experts in the field, our Professorial Research Committee and will be carried out over 3–5 years. Experience to date has shown promising leads on how the cure might be found.
In 2009, the various State based support organisations for those diagnosed with Meniere's Disease amalgamated into a national body, ‘Meniere’s Australia Incorporated’ and our Fund became an independent fundraising corporation, ‘Meniere’s Research Fund Inc’. We look forward to working with Meniere’s Australia Inc to develop support and a cure for those afflicted by Meniere’s Disease.
The most significant development thus far has been the return from the US of our principal researcher Dr. Daniel Brown and the establishment of the world's first Meniere’s Research Laboratory at the Brain and Mind Research Institute, Sydney. He has commenced human studies and collaberative research projects and trials to develop a non invasive diagnostic tool for Meniere’s Disease to assist determining the conditions that lead to the symptoms.
Our programme of research is investigating ‘hydrops’- swelling of fluids in the inner ear canals - as the probable cause and is isolating the conditions that lead to it's development.
The Fund will continue to finance a small, but strong research team to explore and build on the findings from Meniere’s research being carried out by scientists in Australia and other countries.
We are confident that with your help and long term support our research program will lead to the cure.
Bruce Kirkpatrick OAM
President
